Position: Defensive Tackle
LSU
Height: 6-6
Weight: 306 lbs.
Projected Round: 1st
Even as a projected first round pick, the Eagles may find themselves a steal in Michael Brockers. Brockers declared for the NFL Draft only as a redshirt Sophomore, which may cause him to fall down a few draft boards, and right into the Eagles lap at pick 15.
In his Sophomore season, Brockers imposed his will on SEC lineman throughout the year, recording 10 tackles for loss, as well as 2 sacks. In the BCS Championship game vs. Alabama, the Defensive Tackle was one of the few bright spots for LSU, recording seven tackles.
What makes Brockers even more intriguing is his incredible athleticism. Not only can he be a three-technique tackle, but can also rotate in as a Defensive End. His massive frame helps him bulldoze through Offensive Linemen, and makes him a massive threat in the pass rush.
It is no surprise that the Eagles are in need of a Defensive Tackle. With Derek Landri and Trevor Laws both departing in Free Agency, the Eagles are left with Cullen Jenkins and Mike Patterson. Patterson is better suited as a rotational guy who can stuff the run, but is not an every down guy. Jenkins had a strong season with the Eagles last year, but was subject to numerous double teams, which left him rundown.
Enter Michael Brockers.
Brockers would free Jenkins from those double teams, and allow him to be an effective rusher throughout the entire course of the season. The tandem of Jenkins and Brockers would be a nightmare for teams who like to run it up the middle. Forced to move outside, they meet Trent Cole and Jason Babin. Either way, lose-lose situation.
The Houston native is extremely smart for playing so little, but still has room to learn. He would absolutely benefit under the tutelage of DL Coach Jim Washburn. Washburn has been responsible for resurrecting careers like Jason Babin's, and there would be nobody better for Brockers to learn under than him.
The Eagles were 15th in run defense last season, a number that can be improved with the addition of Brockers.
I would compare Brockers to Vikings DT Pat Williams. Both are very explosive off the line and spend most of their time wreaking havoc in backfields.
He will be making 11 pre-draft visits, and the Eagles happen to be one of those teams.
If Michael Brockers is still on the board when pick 15 rolls around, the Eagles should seriously consider making of their first round selection.
Think I speak too highly of him? Check his highlights below:
dallas might get him at pick 14 though
ReplyDeletePossible, but he is not as well suited in a 3-4. Eagles have enough to trade up if need be
