Hamels, Phillies Talk New Contract

According to Jim Salisbury of CSN, the Phillies and Hamels' agent John Boggs are advancing in contract negotiations.“Basically, we’re talking,” Boggs told CSNPhilly.com. “It’s a process. We’ve had a conversation [this week] and we’ll continue the dialogue. Ruben and I have a very good relationship.”

Hopefully Hamels and the Phillies can get a deal done soon. When Jered Weaver of the LAA Angels signed a 5 year, $85 million contract, it was a good gauge of where Hamels should get paid. Although Hamels deal should be should be north of Weaver's deal, I think it would be a good deal for both sides.

More importantly, an advancement in contract talks will put Hamels mind at ease. I love Hamels just as much as the next Phillies fan, but it's obvious he's easily shaken. Give up a double with two outs, and Hamels gives up 3 runs in that inning.

I feared that the uncertainty revolving around Hamels contract situation would cause for a distraction, and he would have a sub-par year. However, Hamels should be put at ease knowing that talks are going well.
