Ruben Amaro Jr. has announced today that RP Jose Contreras is likely to start the season on the DL, as he is still recovering from elbow surgery that he had in September. Amaro also went on to say Contreras is improving, but needs more time.
A more important part of the bullpen, Mike Stutes is suffering from shoulder inflammation, which may land him on the DL as well. With two pieces possibly missing the beginning of the season, pitchers Raul Valdes, Joe Savery, and David Herndon are now fighting for a bullpen spot.
Phillies also signed INF Andres Blanco to a minor league deal today. Last year with the Rangers he hit .224 with 2 HR and 3 RBI in 36 games.
