Eagles Draft Prospect: QB Ryan Tannehill

Ryan Tannehill
Position: Quarterback
Texas A&M
Height: 6-4
Weight: 222 lbs.
Projection: Top 10 pick

Throughout the entire 2011 college football season and the draft process, Quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin have stole the show. However, Texas A&M Quarterback Ryan Tannehill has quietly moved many draft boards. Once considered maybe a late first round pick, Tanehill's undeniable talent and "NFL arm" have experts picking him to go in the Top 10.

While Jerrod Johnson was still QB while at Texas A&M, Tannehill played wide receiver and led the team in receptions. However, Tannehill took over in 2010, and never looked back.

The Texas native finished his A&M career 42 TDs, 21 INTs, and finished his Senior season with an impressive 61.6% completion percentage.

Watching film of Tannehill play, it is very obvious that his strength comes in the short passing game. Texas A&M frequented quick out routes, and Tannehill was very good at leading his receivers to the ball. When throwing short routes, one needs a very quick release, and Tannehill possesses that.

The Senior QB scans the field very quickly and efficiently, and is able to get rid of the ball very fast.

Another specialty of his is his ability to make accurate throws from outside of the pocket, which speaks volumes of his upper body strength. Tannehill is an extremely mobile Quarterback, and NFL defenses will have to devote a Linebacker to contain him.

However, Tannehill's biggest downfall is his inability to make pre-snap reads.  He is very inept when it comes to noticing the outside blitz, and Defensive Coordinators will continue to attack him there. If there is anything Tannehill needs to learn to be a successful QB, it is reading the Defense. If he cannot notice it, his Offensive Linemen will not.

So, where do the Eagles come into play?

Breaking News: Michael Vick is getting older, and continues to take a serious beating every game. With Vick missing at least 3 games over the past two seasons, fans and management alike have to wonder how much longer Vick will be a productive Quarterback.

If the Eagles draft Tannehill, they would have a replacement in line when Vick is no longer able to command the starting job. It would also allow Andy Reid, assuming he will coach with the Eagles until he can coach no more, to institute a safer, more conservative offense.

With Michael Vick, the Eagles have tried to go with explosive plays deep down the field, and pray Jackson and Maclin can beat the Safeties over the top.  Opposing Defenses picked up on that last season, and moved their Safeties back, effectively destroying the deep ball game.

With Tannehill as QB, the Eagles would be able to methodically work their way down the field, taking down defenses with their short game. Jackson and Maclin are very explosive off the line of scrimmage, and quick slants are more effective than the deep passing game.

This all being said, the Eagles drafting Ryan Tannehill are not likely. In order to secure drafting Tannehll, the Eagles would have to move up in front of the Cleveland Browns, all the way to pick #3, currently held by the Minnesota Vikings.

Although the Eagles do have the ammo, the price to move up that high is just way too costly.

With glaring holes on Defense rather than Offense, the Eagles need to address that in the first round.

With two picks in the 2nd round, it is very feasible that the Eagles could select a QB there, possibly Nick Foles from Arizona, or Brock Osweiler from Arizona State.

Both would be a bigger project than Tannehill, but Quarterback is not a need at the top of the list for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Here are some highlights of Senior QB Ryan Tannehill:
