Omar Vizquel is 44 years old. Yet if the Phillies were not able to re-sign Jimmy Rollins, they would have signed Vizquel, according to ESPN's Jayson Stark. The plan would have been for Vizquel to mentor top Phillies SS prospect Freddy Galvis.
Rollins was always top priority, but the idea that the Phillies would be ready to move on with Galvis is a very good sign. In 33 games with AAA Lehigh Valley, Galvis hit .298 with 8 RBI's.
If Rollins were to be injured during the year, I would be inclined to believe the Phillies would call up Galvis, rather than trade for a middle infielder.
Vizquel signed with the Toronto Blue Jays for the 2012 season.
