On the Roster: Michael Vick, Mike Kafka, Trent Edwards
Key Departure: Vince Young
Top Free Agent Quarterbacks:
1. Peyton Manning (IND)
2. Matt Flynn (GB)
3. Alex Smith (SF)
4. Kyle Orton (KC)
5. Jason Campbell (OAK)
6. Rex Grossman (WSH)
7. Vince Young (PHI)
8. Chad Henne (MIA)
8. Josh Johnson (TB)
9. David Garrard (FA)
10. Donovan McNabb (FA)
You know the pickings at Quarterback are slim when Matt Flynn (2 career starts) is going to command a huge payday. With Alex Smith most likely resigning with San Francisco the talent pool gets even smaller. However, the Eagles have no interest in bringing in a starting Quarterback and have no need to. Trent Edwards, signed right before the NFL Combine, is here only to compete with Mike Kafka for the #2 spot on the Depth Chart.
Does this mean the end of the Vince Young experiment? Yes.
The man who doomed the Eagles before the season began by coining them "The Dream Team" had an abysmal year. 4 Touchdowns. 9 Interceptions. Those stats are only good if your name is Koy Detmer. But he is not Koy, and the Eagles will be more than happy to let Vince Young walk.
It is possible that the Eagles could bring in another veteran Quarterback at the beginning of Training Camp. However, they seem pretty set at that position.

I don't understand, is this a list in order of their possibility of getting signed or is this on pure talent?
ReplyDeleteEither way, Josh Johnson actually has gotten a lot of attention. He's most likely going to the Jags. they have a new QB coach who has played with Johnson and would like his own guy to compete with Gabbert, who he's not obliged to start.
I don't understand how a turnover-prone QBs like Grossman and Henne can be ranked above Johnson. Vince Young isn't the most talented guy either and surely isn't a guy for a team that cares about character.
Alex Smith isn't really coveted by any other teams except the 49ers and most likely would stay there.
It's based on level of interest from teams, as well as talent. The only reason Young and Grossman are ranked above Johnson is because Johnson has done absolutely nothing. 9 games last year, 1 touchdown, 2 interceptions. Johnson in 4 starts in 09: 4 TD, 8 INT's, 7 fumbles lost. Hasn't shown anything special yet.
DeleteBut I LOVE Koy Detmer!
ReplyDeleteOn road trips, Koy Detmer would pack two things: a toothbrush and a pair of underwear. True story
