Union, Adu Falter With Surgery

Tonight, the Philadelphia Union will be taking on the Rochester Rhinos in 3rd Round US Open Cup action. However, what is expected to happen after the game that has fans concerned.

Freddy Adu took to Twitter today to make this announcement: "US open cup game then Maryland for my LASIK surgery. Hope everyone has a great week and will connect later."

Adu has mentioned on a few occasions his plan to receive LASIK eye treatment, but to elect to have it in the middle of the MLS season is questionable, at best.

The surgery is used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatisms.

According to WebMD.com, the surgery "All laser vision correction surgeries work by reshaping the cornea, the clear front part of the eye, so that light traveling through it is properly focused onto the retina located in the back of the eye."

Like every surgery, there is always the possibility of it going wrong. LASIK is described as being extremely complex, and is quite possible that Adu's vision could be damaged for good.

Furthermore, there is other reason for concern. Full recovery from LASIK takes about 6
months, and contact sports are not recommended for at least 2 months after surgery.

It is hard to understand what compelled the US national player to get the surgery midseason, especially with the team being 2nd worst in the Eastern Conference.

What is even more confusing, is why Union management allowed Adu to have this procedure. LASIK was not something requested by Union doctors, but rather done on Adu's own.

Nowak and company could have (if they chose) to block him from having it until the offseason, in which procedures like this should be completed.

Rushing Adu back in to action would only be detrimental to him. Take a ball or a boot to the face in a freak accident, and his vision could impaired for life.

Minus Adu as a winger, the Union are left with newly acquired Michael Lahoud, Keon Daniel, and Kai Herdling to play Winger.
